Mira Road, May 26, 2026 – Recent clashes have erupted in the Mira Road area of Mumbai.
Clashes are mainly at Srishti Complex, as tensions flared over preparations for Bakrid, also known as Eid al-Adha, which is set to occur around May 28. Muslim residents had established a temporary shed for approximately 25 goats intended for sacrifice, a common practice during the festival. However, the situation escalated when local Hindu residents, along with groups such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), protested against the shed, citing concerns related to hygiene, odors, and the presence of children witnessing animal sacrifice within a residential society.
In response to complaints, municipal officials dismantled the shed, but attempts to rebuild it led to further protests and a physical confrontation between the two communities. Tensions peaked when VHP leader Nagnath Kamble was reportedly attacked with a sharp weapon during the clash, resulting in one injury, though police have yet to confirm all the details surrounding the incident.
Law enforcement has responded with heavy police deployment, particularly from the Kashimira police station, and has implemented flag marches and increased security measures to maintain peace in the area. Bouncers and vehicle checks have been established to deter further violence.
Authorities have urged both communities to remain calm as the situation, while tense, is currently under control. This incident aligns with a wider pattern of disputes in the Mira-Bhayandar area over animal sacrifice in residential zones. Local BJP leaders, including Kirit Somaiya, have previously called for the enforcement of bans on open slaughter, as outlined by the Bombay High Court and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) guidelines which restrict such activities to municipal slaughterhouses for hygiene and public safety reasons.
As the situation continues to develop, local authorities remain on high alert to prevent any further escalation. Residents are advised to rely on official police announcements and credible local news outlets for the latest updates.
